‘Friends of Namatjira’ is made up of people across Australia and beyond who have seen the Namatjira theatre show or been touched by the project in some way, and have wanted to stay in touch and show support for the project from time to time.
Here are some of the achievements that would not have been possible without a little help from our friends:
- Painting on Country – When the discussions about the project first began with the Namatjira family, the artists made it clear that they wanted to be able to paint on country. With vehicles hard to come by and petrol expensive, it was no easy task for the artists to get out to the sites that informed their art. As such, Big hART made on country painting workshops an integral part of the project.
- Ntaria Ladies Choir CD – In 2011 Big hART worked with the Ntaria Ladies Choir to help record and launch their new CD Tjina Kngarra (The Best of Friends). The CD was launched at the event Aramala Wutjika (While looking, Listening), in front of 200 community members, and live webcast to an audience of the Namatjira theatre show at Melbourne’s Malthouse Theatre. The CD would not have been possible without the support and donations of Friends of the Namatjira Project.
-  Watercolour Artists Professional Development – In 2013 we delivered 2 professional developments with the watercolour artists, supported entirely through donations from friends.
These covered both market and industry development, as well as aesthetic development at an on-country artist camp at stunning Palm Valley. See the news coverage of our first professional development here and have a read of artist Alison Hannaford’s reflections on the on country experience here.
