Documentary

Since its inception, film and documentary has been a vital part of the Namatjira project. Documenting the project and the tour of the show around the country, and running digital and film based workshops with Ntaria school, all feed in to the gradual creation of a documentary film. In 2012 the film shoot has intensified, and fingers crossed, 2013 will see the world premier of a new documentary!

Filmmaker Sera Davies mentoring Belinda Abbott

Synopsis

In a landscape where contemporary Australia continues to struggle with questions of how to reconcile its national identity with its Indigenous roots, with contemporary Indigenous Australians, and with how it imagines its future, this documentary explores the notion of friendship and the role cross cultural friendships have to play in reconciliation. It looks through the prism of the Namatjira family, who live in Western Aranda country in Central Australia, in exploring the notion and reality of friendship. The story of their grandfather, Albert Namatjira – internationally acclaimed watercolour painter and the first Indigenous Australian citizen – is iconographic and nationally significant to the Australian narrative. Albert's story is also that of his friendship with Rex Battarbee, a relationship that had mutual benefits and was a story of entrepreneurship, learning and exchange.

Through the lens of the Namatjira family situation and the thesis of friendship, this documentary provokes much broader questions about the future for Indigenous and non-Indigenous reconciliation in this country and Internationally.

School workshops

Throughout the project, digital literacy and filmmaking workshops have been held at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) School. These workshops are run by Big hART arts workers and have been thoroughly enjoyed by the students who have taken part.

Stay tuned…we’ll post some of the student films soon!

Film & Multimedia

Film and multimedia form an integral part of The Namatjira project. Filmmaking workshops are held with students at Ntaria (Hermannsburg) school, and the process of creating the show has been recorded by a documentary film making crew.

This footage will later form part of a documentary about Big hART's work with communities, but if you want a sneak preview check out the short films and clips below.
